The History of Sun Hang Chang
Sun Hung Chang is a well established and renowned oriental grocer's based in Hampshire. A family run business, it was originally established in 1965 by Kuang Lam Thi in Vietnam's Cholon, Saigon's vibrant China town. Known then as 'Hung Chang', meaning 'prosperous evolution', the business served the local community for about ten years.

With the advent of the Vietnam War in 1975, the business was forced to close. The Thi family, along with thousands of other families, flee the homeland.

Arriving in the United Kingdom in July 1979, Ha Thi, Kuang Lam's eldest son, worked as a factory labourer for 5 years whilst learning English and adapting to life in Britain. In 1984 Ha Thi decided to regenerate his father's business by running a small market stall in markets within the Hampshire area including Fareham, Chichester, Hythe and Lymington market.

Eventually a small unit was rented in Tricorn Indoor Market and Sun Hung Chang was born - 'Sun' meaning new. Maintaining the business' outdoor market activities, awareness of the Tricorn unit grew and soon business flourished. In 1987 the business was moved to much larger premises in Portsmouth's Tricorn Centre where it traded for 9 years.

Ha Thi retired in 1994 leaving the business to his daughter, Bang Thi. In 1997 Sun Hung Chang was relocated to Portsmouth's Commercial Road, due to the redevelopment of the Tricorn Centre.

Sun Hung Chang's product range has and continues to expand, offering Chinese, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malaysian ingredients as well as oriental gifts, ornaments and martial arts book and equipments. Together with friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff Sun Hung Chang has become an essential stop for Asian grocery and gifts.
